What Actually Makes a Video a "Short"

Two things: orientation and length. A Short is vertical, shot or cropped to 9:16, and uploaded through YouTube's dedicated Shorts flow rather than as a standard video. Duration used to be capped at 60 seconds; YouTube extended that to up to three minutes, so newer Shorts can run noticeably longer than the format's early days. There's still no native way to save a Short to your device from most accounts, which is the whole reason this tool exists.

Shorts vs. TikTok vs. Instagram Reels

All three are the same basic format: vertical, short, algorithm-driven. But they're separate systems with separate audiences. A video posted as a Short does not appear on TikTok or as a Reel automatically, creators have to upload to each platform on its own. If you're trying to save a clip you saw on one platform, make sure you're pasting a genuine YouTube Shorts link here, not a re-upload from somewhere else. Our TikTok Downloader and Instagram Reels Downloader handle those separately.

When a "Short" Isn't a Short Anymore

Occasionally a Shorts link you copy redirects to a regular /watch?v= page instead of loading in the vertical player. That happens when YouTube reclassifies a video, usually because it ran long enough to no longer qualify as Shorts content. It's not an error. Just copy the URL from wherever it landed and paste that instead, it downloads exactly the same way.

Saving a Short: Step by Step

  1. Find the Short, in the Shorts feed or from a link someone sent you
  2. Tap the Share icon and choose Copy link, or lift the URL from your browser bar
  3. Paste it into the box at the top of this page
  4. Click Download, and the available quality options load in a few seconds
  5. Pick a resolution, and the MP4 saves in its original vertical format, uncropped

On Your Phone

On iPhone, copy the link from the YouTube app, open Safari, paste it into the box above, and tap Download. The file lands in your Files app, and you can move it into Photos from there. On Android, copy the link the same way, open Chrome, paste it, and tap Download. Chrome saves it straight to your Downloads folder with no extra step.

Why Some Shorts Won't Download

A Short that's age-gated, region-restricted, or set to private by the uploader won't load here, the same way it wouldn't play for a logged-out viewer on YouTube itself. If a link fails, open it directly on YouTube first to confirm it actually plays before assuming the tool is broken.

Link formats this tool reads:

Frequently Asked Questions

On the vertical format, the length cap, and how Shorts compares elsewhere

Length and orientation. Shorts are vertical, 9:16 clips capped at up to three minutes, uploaded through YouTube's dedicated Shorts flow. A regular upload can be any length or aspect ratio. If a video started as a Short but runs long, YouTube sometimes reclassifies it and the URL changes from /shorts/ to a standard /watch? link.
They're close cousins built around the same vertical, short-form format, but each lives inside its own app with a separate algorithm, separate creator payout system, and separate audience. A clip posted as a Short will not automatically appear as a TikTok or a Reel, they have to be uploaded to each platform separately.
Copy the Shorts URL from the app or browser, paste it into the input field on this page, and click Download. Choose a quality and the Short saves as an MP4 in its original vertical format.
Yes, completely free, with no account and no hidden charges. There is a fair daily limit per IP address to keep the service fast for everyone.
No. This pulls the original file directly from YouTube. There is no watermark or logo added by MultSaver, unlike some other platforms that stamp a badge on every save.
Yes. Paste the same Shorts link into our YouTube Audio Downloader and it extracts the sound as MP3 or M4A instead of downloading the full video.
On iPhone, copy the link, open Safari, paste it here, and tap Download. The file lands in your Files app. On Android, copy the link, open Chrome, paste it, and tap Download. The file saves straight to your Downloads folder.
Some Shorts are age-gated, region-restricted, or set to private by the creator. Only publicly available Shorts can be downloaded.
That Short likely got reclassified as a standard video, which happens when a clip runs long enough that YouTube no longer treats it as Shorts content. Just copy the new URL from that page and paste it here instead, it will still work.
Downloading for personal, offline viewing is generally tolerated. Redistributing, re-uploading, or commercialising downloaded content without the creator's permission may violate copyright law and YouTube's Terms of Service.
